Look at what’s happening in Portola Valley

Near the heart of Silicon Valley lies the Town of Portola Valley, nine square miles of lush landscapes and magnificent homes that are among the finest (and most expensive) in the United States.  To be precise, Portola Valley homes in 2013 were ranked as the ninth most-expensive in the country by Forbes magazine. The 4,400 people who reside in the town, which includes the community of Ladera, have a collective median household income of $244,771 per year, making Portola Valley the sixth-wealthiest place in California.

When people in other parts of the country talk or read about life in Silicon Valley, the subject of home prices in Portola Valley and other Bay Area cities and towns often arises.  Many are amazed at listing prices soaring well above $10 million dollars, such as a current home on the market in Portola Valley listed for $19,800,000.

But residents here know that living in Portola Valley is about much more than home prices and the homes themselves.  There’s plenty going on for those who seek interesting civic, social and recreational activities.  The calendar posted on the Town of Portola Valley website gives several examples.

Town events scheduled for August include:

  • Babies & Books Storytime, each Monday at 11 a.m. at the Portola Valley Library
  • Parks & Rec Committee meeting at the historic schoolhouse (which is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places)
  • Toddler Storytime, each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Portola Valley Library
  • Bicycle, Pedestrian & Traffic Safety Committee meeting at the historic schoolhouse
  • Trails & Paths Committee meeting at the historic schoolhouse
  • Ad-Hoc Water Conservation Task Force meeting at Town Hall
  • Emergency Preparedness Committee meeting at Town Hall
  • Portola Valley Quilter’s Club gathering at the Buckeye Room, Town Center

There are many other clubs, committees and activities for people who are enthusiastic about life in Portola Valley and especially those who are motivated to make a difference.

Happy 50th!

The year 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Portola Valley.  Part of the celebration includes a Summer Concert Series with a different show each month.  On August 21, the public is invited to a killer blues jam at Town Center.

The anniversary celebration is ongoing throughout the year and aims to recognize the town’s people, its amazing and extensive trail system, the lively flora and fauna seen everywhere and the beautiful skies and bright stars overhead.

These are just a few of the things happening in Portola Valley.  You can learn about many more by paying a visit and talking with the “locals,” a large number of whom are very active volunteers focused on preserving nature in and around the town and maintaining a quality of life they believe is the best anywhere.
